BIG TEXAS ART SCULPTURES
Stylized Texas Sculptures created by Artist Ray Gatica from Humble, TX. Gatica is mid-career artist who has worked in the Houston, Texas area for over 17 years creating mostly large art, murals and graphics. Creating these large TEXAS sculptures is a new, creative endeavor for Gatica while keeping with the tradition of working in large format.
The sculptures are light weight, weighing only around 50 pounds. They are great for the garden, as lawn or patio ornaments. We can even make them into mail box holders. (Each of the Texas shapes/sculptors are set in to the base with about 4 inches of concrete to secure them in to the base and make them bottom heavy - so that they will securely stand up, without easily falling over.) Unlike real stone sculptors that may weigh a few hundred pounds these sculptors are lite-weight so that they can be moved and relocated easily.
The Construction: The bases for the sculptures are construction-grade Styrofoam that is cut and sculpted in the desired shape. A glass-mesh is applied and then a stucco primer base is then laid over the mesh. After the stucco primer stucco dries, each piece is primed with a Kilz primer, and then painted with exterior grade paint with the Texas flag colors. Or they can be left as a faux stone finish with a neutral color of stone grey or light brown, etc.
Two to choose from: The first one is a about 41” inches high and 37 inches wide, by 6.5 inches in depth, with a 17”X 13” base; and weighs around 35 pounds. The finish on this is a left plain neutral color, but can be painted as the second one; (See below).
The second one is larger and more stylized version. The idea was to have a Texas form as a “Brawny”, broad -shoulder-and-narrow-at-the-hip look. When you look at this one from the front you will see the shape is 12 inches at the top and tapers down to six inches at the bottom by the base. This one is painted the traditional red, white and blue - Texas flag colors and is approximately 48 inches tall, 42 inches wide, and 12 inches in depth. The base measures 16 “X 19”. Even though they look heavy, this one only weighs 65 pounds. (Go to see)
Customers have the option of having larger ones constructed if desired. We can also paint the address or name on the sculptures upon request. The possibilities are endless and just about any size can be created. They make nice lawn ornaments, plant stands, and decorative patio pieces. I am also thinking of making some mail box stands, too.
